Most businesses don't compete with the whole internet. They compete with the ten businesses down the road.

Local SEO decides who shows up when someone searches "dentist near me," "divorce attorney in Tampa," or "chiropractor open Saturday." The winners get the call. Everyone else gets nothing.

This guide covers what actually moves local rankings. No theory. Five factors, in order of impact.

1. Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile carries more local ranking weight than your website.

Complete every field:

An incomplete profile signals an inactive business. Google ranks it accordingly.

Full breakdown: Google Business Profile Optimization.

2. Reviews

Reviews drive rankings and conversions at the same time. Nothing else does both.

The system that works:

A steady stream of recent reviews beats a large stack of old ones. Velocity matters.

Healthcare practices: never reference a patient's condition, visit, or identity in a response. Thank them and move on. HIPAA applies to review replies.

3. Citations and NAP Consistency

NAP = Name, Address, Phone.

Google cross-references your business across Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Facebook, industry directories, and data aggregators. Mismatches erode trust. Trust erodes rankings.

One formatting standard, everywhere. "123 Main St." and "123 Main Street" are a mismatch. Pick one.

Audit once, fix everything, then check twice a year. This is maintenance, not strategy.

4. Location and Service Pages

One page per service. One page per city you actually serve.

The rule that separates pages that rank from pages that don't: every location page needs original content about serving that community. Landmarks, neighborhoods, local case examples, directions from known roads.

Duplicating one page and swapping city names doesn't work. Google filters it out. Ten thin city pages lose to three real ones.

5. Local Content

Publish answers to the questions your local customers ask:

Local content earns local links β€” news outlets, chambers of commerce, community organizations. Those links are the authority signal your competitors can't fake.

The Order of Operations

Do it in this sequence:

Expect movement in 60–90 days. Expect meaningful results in 6 months. Anyone promising faster is selling something that doesn't work.

Bottom Line

Local SEO is not complicated. It's unforgiving of neglect.

Complete profile. Consistent citations. Real reviews. Real pages. Local content on a schedule.

The businesses that do all five, every month, own their market's search results. Most won't. That's the opportunity.
